How to Experience the Northern Lights?

To fully experience the Northern Lights phenomenon, plan your visit during the winter months, typically from September to March, when nights are longest and skies are darkest. The northern lights we see from the ground are caused by electrically charged particles from space entering the Earth’s upper atmosphere at a very high speed. Therefore remember, clear skies are essential as the Northern Lights occur above the level of clouds. Stay up late, as sightings are most active after midnight, but patience is key as sightings are not guaranteed.

For optimal viewing, choose a location away from light pollution on a cloudless night, such as our guesthouse in Seltjarnarnes, just outside Reykjavík. Additionally, you can head to the famous viewpoint just a 5-minute car drive away at Grotta Lighthouse, or visit the nearby Golf Course.
